Why hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is used to:

  • Find out the cause of menstrual problems, such as - unusual bleed, heavy menses, postmenopausal bleed

  • Find out any growth or abnormalities within the womb

  • Find out the cause of repeated miscarriage or difficulties to get pregnant

  • Treat conditions such as polyp, fibroid, removing intrauterine device (IUD), removing scar tissues.

What is hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure to examine and treat condition involving the inner layer of the womb with a thin telescope (camera).

How is the operation performed?

The hysteroscope (camera) is inserted thorugh the vagina, into the womb via a natural opening. There is no cuts required on the tummy. The hysteroscope is attached to a light source so that the doctor can see inside the womb. If any surgical procedures are necessary, there are different types of long thin instruments that can be inserted through the hysteroscope.

Hysteroscope can be done under local or general anaesthesia. Pain killers and antibiotics will be given before the procedures. The procedures usually take between 15 to 30 minutes.

Why do I need hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy allows doctor to diagnose any problems inside the womb cavity, as well as to perform small surgery when treatment is required.

You may need hysteroscopy if you have the below issues:

  • Heavy periods

  • Bleeding in between period

  • Bleeding after menopause

  • To investigate / remove lesion seen on scan (eg: polyp/ fibroid)

  • To remove retained IUCD

  • Fertility concern

What are the risk of hysteroscopy?

Common risks:

  • Pain

  • Bleeding / discharge

Uncommon risks:

  • Uterine perforation (0.1% - 0.8%) (small puncture to the uterine wall)

  • Injury to adjacent organ

  • Infection

  • Too much fluids (Fluids overload)

  • Fail to visualize the uterine cavity

  • Intrauterine adhesion

  • Air or gas embolism which may be life threatening
